Liberal Democrats launch Sheffield's 'Big Spring Clean'12.00.00am GMT Thu 11th Mar 2010
Local Liberal Democrats on Sheffield City Council have launched Sheffield's 'Big Spring Clean'. Last year's event was a great success with over 2000 people from nearly 100 different groups and organisations joining with the Council to clean up their local neighbourhood. They cleared thousands of sacks of litter from local parks and green spaces. This year Lib Dems want the event to be even bigger and better. The Council is calling on everyone across the city to roll up their sleeves and spring in to action to make this year's event the biggest clean up that the city has ever seen. This year the event runs all the way through March and April. Cllr Ian Auckland, Lib Dem Cabinet member for Streetscene said "The Big Spring Clean event is a Lib Dem manifesto pledge and last year it proved to be hugely popular. We know that making sure our local streets are clean is a real priority for local people, that's why we are so keen to see the Big Spring Clean event go from strength to strength." You could: > Organise a spring clean event and get people together to clean up an area you think needs some help. > Join together with other people and litter pick the streets and open spaces where you live. > Join with your neighbours to brush up your street. > Pick rubbish as you walk the dog. > Get together with your work, voluntary group, local association, youth club, school or faith group to have a clean up event. Make it into a party! > Persuade your managers at work to sign up and get involved. The council can also match you up with a site in Sheffield that needs cleaning or help find some volunteers for an area you think needs attending. For more information visit the Council website at www.sheffield.gov.uk/springclean or you can email the Council on: streetforce@sheffield.gov.uk or telephone: 0114 273 4221.
