Sheffield's 'Steel Women' set to receive ultimate honour

12.00.00am GMT Wed 24th Feb 2010

Liberal Democrat councillors on Sheffield City Council have proposed to honour the city's 'Women of Steel', the many women who worked in the steel industry during World War, by erecting a permanent monument in the City Centre. In a proposal to be voted on at next week's Council meeting, the majority Lib Dem Council Group have asked the Council to ensure a monument to the women's courage and hard work is placed in a prominent city centre location.

The move represents an outstanding conclusion to the campaign to gain recognition for women who worked in the Sheffield steel industry during the war.

Cllr Paul Scriven, Liberal Democrat Leader of Sheffield City Council, said:

"The reaction to the Star's 'Women of Steel' campaign has been overwhelming. It's clear that Sheffielders believe these brave and courageous women deserve the ultimate recognition. Therefore we think that a permanent monument in the city centre would be a fitting tribute."

"If our proposal is voted through then the Chief Executive of the Council will come back in two months with a report giving proposals. I would also ask that local people get in contact with the Council to tell us what their views are."

The news comes after the Council has already confirmed a reception for the 'Women of Steel' in the Town Hall on 13th April 2010.

Paul added "It's so important that Sheffield celebrates it's proud history and the Women of Steel is a perfect example of this."
