The Corus plant in Stocksbridge

The three local Liberal Democrat councillors that represent Stocksbridge have given their reaction to the news that 379 of the approximately 700 local Corus jobs are to be axed. In a joint statement, Cllr Martin Brelsford, Cllr Alison Brelsford and Cllr Jack Clarkson, said "These job cuts will come as a huge blow to the area we represent. Many local families will be devastated by this and they will still be trying to get over the shock."

"It's vital that support is put into place immediately. Therefore we're pleased to know that the Council, along with jobcentreplus and other agencies, is already working on this."

"We believe that it's time that the Government took the same approach to the steel industry in places like Stocksbridge as it has to the banking industry in London. More support from the Government is needed."
