Labour MP'S plan to scupper two school solution rejected

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 30th Jun 2008

Local Lib Dems have rejected claims from Sheffield's Labour MPs and reaffirmed their commitment to a two school solution. Sheffield's Liberal Democrats are reacting to the news that Sheffield's five Labour MPs have ignored local people and are 'throwing their full weight behind' the merger of Wisewood and Myers Grove Schools.

The Liberal Democrats policy of working towards a two school solution was overwhelmingly backed by the local communities affected at the local elections.

After losing control of the Council in May the local Labour Party have called on their MPs to block local people's preferred solution. However, Liberal Democrats have pledged to stick up for local people and work towards what they voted for at the ballot box.

Cllr Andrew Sangar, Liberal Democrat Cabinet member for Children's Services and Lifelong Learning, said: -

"Clearly Labour are intent on these closures going ahead and they seem prepared to do anything to see their unpopular plan come to fruition. Even losing control of the Council won't make them see sense and listen to local people."

"Now the local Labour Party have called on their MPs and friends in Whitehall to do everything they can to scupper the two school solution that we are working towards. It's appalling that they should act in this way, ignoring the wishes of the local communities involved which were clearly demonstrated at the local elections."

"But this won't deter the Liberal Democrats from sticking up for local people and fighting for a two school solution in line with their wishes. We will continue to work towards this end despite the obstacles that the Labour Party seem intent on putting up. Local people have said what they want through the ballot box, all politicians have a duty to work together to deliver it."
