Weekly Bin Collections to Stay Under the Lib Dems12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 29th May 2008
The new Liberal Democrat Sheffield City Council have announced that they will be keeping weekly black bin collections. The news comes despite Labour Party claims that Lib Dems intended to end weekly collections if they gained control of the Council. Leaflets distributed by the Labour Party at the local elections falsely claimed that local people had '24 hours to save their weekly bin collection' as they where under threat from the Lib Dems. Lib Dems are to use their first Council meeting as an opportunity to outline their commitment to keep weekly black bin collections. They have made clear that the only plans they have for waste collection is to expend opportunities for local people to recycle. Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed, Liberal Democrat Cabinet member for Climate Change and the Local Environment, said: - "I was disappointed, but not surprised, when Labour tried to trick local people at the elections. Labour knew full well that the weekly bin collection wasn't under threat if the Lib Dems came to power at the local elections." "Now that the people of Sheffield have put us into power, we are in a position to confirm to them that we are committed to keeping the weekly black bin collection. But, unlike Labour, we also intend to expand opportunities for local people to recycle."
