Last year's event was a great success with over 2000 people from nearly 100 different groups and organisations joining with the Council to clean up their local neighbourhood. They cleared thousands of sacks of litter from local parks and green spaces. This year Lib Dems want the event to be even bigger and better.

The other three cities shortlisted are Birmingham, Derry and Norwich, meaning that Sheffield will fly the flag for North of England. Lib Dems are now urging Sheffielders to get behind the bid so that our city becomes the 2013 UK City of Culture. Hillsborough Ward Liberal Democrat councillor Joe Taylor will propose that the Council writes to the Prime Minister and Business Secretary Lord Mandelson to demand that they safeguard the 700 local jobs at the factory in Owlerton, after the takeover of British firm Cadbury by the multinational food giant Kraft.

As a result of every Community Assembly investing in extra environmental teams, over 100 extra job requests have been tackled in just three months.
