Welcome to Sheffield Liberal Democrats
After a great campaign and result for the Liberal Democrats in Sheffield's 2008 local elections we are getting on with the job of delivering on the agenda backed by local people. There has been action to cut crime through more uniformed officers on the beat. Green action, including free recycling for green waste and protecting our parks. Cleaner Streets through giving local people control over street cleaning budgets. A fair deal through bringing Labour's 'favoured areas' policy to an end.
Over the coming months and years I will be working towards improving your local Council so that everyone in Sheffield can see the benefit. We really are committed to making sure Sheffield is a place where everyone matters.
Councillor Paul Scriven, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Sheffield City Council.

The ruling Liberal Democrats on Sheffield City Council have revealed that they saved local taxpayers £1,610,000 on publicity costs in 2008/09 compared to the previous financial year when Labour were in control at the Town Hall. Cllr Simon Clement-Jones, Liberal Democrat Cabinet member for Finance and Customer Focused Services, said: "I'm delighted that the Liberal Democrats have been able to make good on our commitments. As a result of insisting that costs are driven down, local taxpayers have saved a huge £1.6m compared to what Labour used to spend on publications."

Many local families will be devastated by this and they will still be trying to get over the shock."

Extra support is being given to rural areas of Sheffield to help residents ensure their villages remain vibrant communities. Liberal Democrat councillors on Sheffield City Council's new Northern Community Assembly have agreed to fund a part-time village officer who will work with local people to identify improvements the community would like to see - such as a new playground or car park, help them apply for funding to enable the work to take place and share good ideas and develop closer links between neighbouring communities.

Labour Councillors on the North East Community Assembly have agreed to buy the infamous New Deal for Burngreave 'Bling Bus'. It cost £130,000 of public money and was equipped with top-of-the range equipment. At the time the decision to purchase the custom made bus was met with widespread criticism due to it's price and the £30,000 a year running costs. But now the cash-strapped organisation is selling its custom-built 'bling mobile' to the Labour controlled Community assembly for a knockdown £20,000.

We are completely opposed to these cuts and we call on FirstBus to see sense and drop them immediately."

Small businesses in Sheffield have saved over a quarter of a million pounds during the credit crunch thanks to the Liberal Democrats. The Lib Dem Council has been working with local business across the city to encourage those who are eligible for business rate relief to apply. Small business rate relief is available to businesses with a rateable value below £15,000. Already hundreds of businesses have come forward, but there is still more money to be saved.

Liberal Democrats in Sheffield have thanked voters after celebrating seeing their share of the vote increase in last week's European Elections. In stark contrast the Labour Party vote collapsed by over 9%, a much greater decline than many other Yorkshire areas including Leeds, York and Kirklees. In addition the Tory share of the vote saw a decrease in Sheffield and the Green Party also failed to make an impact after being beaten into fifth place.
